What Happens During a Routine Lift Service Visit? A Maintenance Checklist

Many building owners pay for lift service every month without ever seeing what happens during a visit. That makes it hard to judge whether the work is thorough. Knowing what a proper lift service in Bangalore includes helps you hold your service company to a good standard.

Here is what a routine maintenance visit normally covers.

Before the technician starts

A good service begins with a conversation. The technician checks the lift logbook, asks the building staff or residents about any issues since the last visit, and informs the security team that the lift will be out of service for a short time. The area is made safe for work with proper signage.

The routine checklist

  1. Machine room and drive. The motor, drive and controller are checked for heat, noise, loose connections and wear. Where a machine room is present it should be clean, ventilated and free from storage.
  2. Brakes. Brake operation and wear are tested because brakes are critical for safety.
  3. Ropes, belts or hydraulic parts. Suspension elements are inspected for wear, tension and damage. Hydraulic systems are checked for leaks.
  4. Guide rails and guide shoes. Rails are cleaned and lubricated where needed, and guide shoes are checked for wear.
  5. Doors and door equipment. Landing and cabin doors, sensors, safety edges and door tracks are checked, because most lift faults involve doors.
  6. Safety devices. Overload protection, limit switches, emergency stop and other safety components are tested.
  7. Levelling and travel. The technician checks that the lift stops level with each floor and runs smoothly.
  8. Cabin. Lights, fans, buttons, indicators, alarm and intercom are tested.
  9. Pit and top of the cabin. The pit is inspected for cleanliness, water and wear, and the equipment above the cabin is checked.
  10. Test run. After the work, the lift is run through its full travel to confirm that everything works.

The service report

At the end of the visit you should receive a short report listing the work done, any faults found and any recommended repairs. Keep these reports together with the lift logbook. They are valuable if a problem repeats, and they show regulators and insurers that the lift is maintained. Our lift AMC guide explains what a good contract should include.

Signs your lift needs attention between visits

  • Jerks, vibration or sudden stops.
  • The lift stopping above or below the floor level.
  • Slow, bouncing or noisy doors.
  • New noises or a burning smell.
  • Lights, indicators, alarm or intercom not working.

Report these immediately. See our lift safety checklist for apartments and RWAs for what residents and security staff can do.

How often should service visits happen?

The right frequency depends on usage and age. A lift in a busy apartment building or a hospital needs more frequent visits than a home lift. Your service company should recommend a schedule and write it into the contract.
