Goods Lift vs Freight Lift: Which One Does Your Warehouse or Shop Need?

Pallets of goods stacked on warehouse racking

Bengaluru runs on logistics. Shops, wholesalers, godowns, factories and warehouses all move stock between floors every day, and carrying boxes up the stairs is slow, risky and expensive in labour. A goods lift or a freight lift solves that, but many buyers are unsure which one they actually need.

The two names are often used loosely, and the difference matters. Here is how to decide.

Goods lift and freight lift: the simple difference

Both lifts carry goods, not passengers. A goods lift is typically a practical lift for shops, godowns and commercial buildings that carries stock, cartons and supplies. A freight lift is a heavy-duty lift built for large and heavy loads such as pallets, machinery and industrial goods, usually in warehouses and factories. The real dividing line is the size of the load, how it is loaded and how often the lift runs.

Five questions that decide the right lift

  1. What is the heaviest load per trip? Include the weight of the goods and the trolley or pallet truck.
  2. What is the biggest item you carry? The cabin and door size must fit it, with room to turn and place it safely.
  3. How is it loaded? Staff with trolleys, pallet trucks or a forklift each need a different cabin and floor design.
  4. How many trips per day? A shop with a few trips an hour has a very different duty cycle from a warehouse running all shifts.
  5. How many floors, and what is the shaft? Shaft size, pit depth and overhead height need to be planned with the building.

Do not forget a small service lift

If you only need to move light items such as files, food or small parcels, a dumbwaiter may be enough. It takes less space and costs less than a full goods lift. It is also popular for kitchens, restaurants and hotels.

Safety around goods lifts

  • Never exceed the rated load shown on the lift.
  • Keep passengers out of goods lifts unless the lift is designed and approved for it.
  • Keep doors and landing areas clear of obstructions.
  • Train staff to load goods evenly and to report any unusual noise or movement.
  • Have the lift inspected and serviced regularly. Our AMC guide explains how.

Plan it with the building

If you are constructing a new warehouse or commercial building in Bangalore, decide the lift type, size and position early. If you are adding a lift to an existing building, a site survey will confirm what is possible. Read our guide on planning lifts in multi-storey buildings for general principles.

Key takeaways

  • Goods lifts suit shops and godowns; freight lifts suit heavy, frequent industrial loads.
  • Decide by load, item size, loading method, trips per day and shaft details.
  • A small dumbwaiter may be enough for light items.

Frequently asked questions

Can people ride in a goods lift?

Not unless the lift is designed and approved for carrying people. Goods lifts are intended for goods, so follow your installer's guidance.

Can a freight lift be loaded with a forklift?

Only if it is designed for that purpose. Tell your installer how you load the lift so the cabin and floor are built accordingly.

How do I choose the capacity?

Add up the heaviest load including the trolley or pallet truck, and allow for future growth. Our team can help you work this out during a site visit.
