Lift Etiquette: Dos and Don'ts for Residents and Visitors

Long glass-walled corridor in a modern building with a lamp and sofa

Good lift manners keep lifts safe, clean and fast for everybody. In busy apartment buildings and offices in Bangalore, a few simple habits reduce waiting time, damage and accidents. Here is a short list of dos and don'ts that an RWA can print for the lift lobby.

Do

  1. Let people exit first, then enter. It speeds up every trip.
  2. Press the call button once. Pressing repeatedly does not make the lift come faster.
  3. Move to the back and keep the doors area clear so others can board.
  4. Keep within the rated load. If the buzzer sounds, someone should step out.
  5. Hold children by the hand and keep them away from the doors.
  6. Use the service lift for furniture, large deliveries and moving house.
  7. Report faults such as jerks, noises, slow doors or mis-levelling to the building office or lift company.
  8. Give priority to elders, wheelchair users and people with prams.

Don't

  1. Do not hold the doors with hands, feet or objects. It damages the door equipment.
  2. Do not jump, kick or lean on the walls or doors.
  3. Do not use the lift in a fire unless it is designated for it. Use the stairs.
  4. Do not smoke, spit or litter inside the cabin.
  5. Do not let children play with the buttons or in the lobby.
  6. Do not force open doors if the lift stops. Use the alarm and wait for help.
  7. Do not overload the lift with heavy items or trolleys that are not meant for it.

Pets and luggage

  • Keep pets on a short lead or in a carrier.
  • Keep luggage close and out of the doorway.
  • Protect the floor and walls when moving large items.

If you are stuck

Stay calm, press the alarm or intercom and do not force the doors. See what to do if you are stuck in a lift.

For RWAs and managers

  • Display the rules in the lobby and inside the cabin.
  • Show the emergency and service numbers clearly.
  • Keep a monthly check routine. See the lift safety checklist.
