A scorecard is easy to print and hard to use well. This page shows how it works with an illustrative example using three fictional companies, A, B and C, so that you can see how the numbers lead to a decision. The method is the same whichever company you evaluate, and it will help you find the best elevator company in Bangalore for your own building.
The setting for our example
A 24-flat apartment society is choosing a lift company for a new lift and AMC. It has three quotations. Prices are similar. The committee needs a fair, documented decision. The example is fictional and the numbers are only illustrative.
Step 1: Choose criteria and weights
| Criterion | Weight |
|---|---|
| Site survey and recommendation | 3 |
| Safety and licence support | 3 |
| AMC terms and response | 3 |
| References | 2 |
| Installation plan and schedule | 2 |
| Total cost over ten years | 2 |
Step 2: Score each company from 1 to 5
| Criterion (weight) | A | B | C |
|---|---|---|---|
| Survey (3) | 5 | 3 | 2 |
| Safety and licence (3) | 4 | 4 | 3 |
| AMC and response (3) | 4 | 3 | 2 |
| References (2) | 4 | 4 | 3 |
| Installation plan (2) | 4 | 3 | 3 |
| Ten-year cost (2) | 3 | 4 | 5 |
Step 3: Multiply and add
Company A: 15 + 12 + 12 + 8 + 8 + 6 = 61. Company B: 9 + 12 + 9 + 8 + 6 + 8 = 52. Company C: 6 + 9 + 6 + 6 + 6 + 10 = 43. Company C is the cheapest over ten years but scores poorly on survey and AMC. Company A wins because it scores well on the criteria that matter most for safety and service.
Step 4: Check the numbers against proof
- Does each score have a document behind it?
- Have you called the references?
- Have you read the AMC draft, not just the headline?
See the printable customer scorecard.
Lessons from the example
- The cheapest option is not always the best total value.
- Weights make your priorities visible.
- The best elevator company in Bangalore for you is the one that wins on the criteria you chose before seeing the prices.
